Although in some cases, repairing your heating system will allow you to get years of use out of the same unit, there will come a time when replacing your system is really the best option.
Here are a few signs that it's time to get a new heating system:
- Your heater or furnace is old. Most heating systems are expected to last 12-15 years. If your furnace has a pilot light, it’s likely your system is more than 25 years old. If you’ve lived in your home for a number of years, you may be used to the performance of your old heating system. But chances are, as your heating system ages, repairs will become more frequent and your system will not operate as efficiently as it once did.
- Your utility costs have increased. When you replace a heating unit that’s more than 10 years old, it’s estimated that you can save up to 30 percent on your utility bill.
- Your thermostat needs constant adjustment. If you can’t seem to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home, or if the temperatures in each room vary greatly, it may be time for a new heating system.
- It seems like you’re always repairing your unit. If you find yourself becoming close friends with the heating repair technician because they’re always dropping by to repair something, it’s likely that you could benefit from replacing your old heating system.
